I had set the camera two full stops underexposed last night, and forgot about it. Shot all evening without reviewing, and didn’t remember until I uploaded the day’s images.

Fortunately, shooting RAW recovering exposure is easy, and pretty interesting. Enough so that when I have a bunch of time to burn I’ll run the same shot through the range of exposures to better understand where the color shifts are, where the noise lives, and what the limits are.

(The shot above isn’t typical of results – color was generally excellent – for this particular view the monochrome tone comes from shooting into the sun in early evening.)

Net effect from today is that I shot faster at middle apertures with low ISO, and came up with crisper shots. Of course it all makes total sense, guess I just needed a reminder. It’s easy to just settle into Aperture Priority (as I did) and not think too much about exposure. That is a mistake.
